Home services marketing
The only vertical where the first decision is which Google product to buy at all.
Home services is the one vertical facing a genuine structural choice between Local Services Ads and standard Search, before any campaign is built. Underneath that, the conversion is a phone call rather than a form, demand swings with weather and season, and emergency and planned intent behave like two different businesses.
What differs
What makes home services marketing different?
A structural choice no other vertical faces: Local Services Ads and standard Search are different products with different economics, and most accounts need both.
Most verticals start with campaign structure. Home services starts a step earlier, with which Google product to buy. Local Services Ads sit above standard Search results, charge per lead rather than per click, and require background screening and licence verification. Standard Search charges per click and gives you the control and visibility Local Services Ads do not.
They are not substitutes, and treating them as an either-or is the most common structural error. Local Services Ads typically produce cheaper leads with less control and much thinner reporting. Search produces more expensive traffic that you can shape, exclude and diagnose. Most accounts of any size need both, with budget moved between them based on which is actually producing booked jobs rather than which reports better.
Below that, the vertical is defined by two demand patterns that behave like separate businesses. Emergency work converts in minutes, by phone, at any hour, and is close to price-insensitive. Planned work involves comparison, quotes and a decision over days or weeks. Running them in one campaign with one message and one bid guarantees underperformance on both.
Seasonality is sharper here than almost anywhere. Heating demand tracks cold snaps, cooling tracks heat waves, and a single weather event can move a month's demand into a week. Budgets held flat across that pattern systematically underspend when demand is highest.
Intent
What are the intent patterns in home services search?
Split hard between emergency and planned work, with heavy weather-driven seasonality, strong price sensitivity, and a large do-it-yourself research layer underneath.
Emergency and same-day
Burst pipes, no heat, no power. Converts in minutes, by phone, at any hour, and largely price-insensitive. Worth bidding hard for and worth answering out of hours, because the person will simply call the next result.
Planned replacement and installation
System replacement, new installations and renovations. Long consideration, multiple quotes, price comparison, and the highest job values in the account. Needs different copy, different pages and different follow-up from emergency work.
Maintenance and seasonal service
Tune-ups, inspections and servicing. Predictable, low value individually, and valuable mainly as the entry point to a customer relationship that produces replacement work later.
Price and quote queries
Cost searches are heavy in this vertical and frequently precede any provider search. Answering the structure of cost rather than dodging it captures people who are otherwise still comparing.
Do-it-yourself troubleshooting
Enormous volume from people trying to fix it themselves. A share converts when the attempt fails, which makes it a legitimate but deliberate buy rather than something to absorb by accident.
Negative keyword themes this vertical needs
Themes that matter here specifically. A generic negative list will not contain them, and each one is a recurring source of spend that looks like relevant traffic.
- Do-it-yourself repair and parts
- How-to guides, replacement parts and tool searches dominate the space around every service term and mostly indicate somebody who has decided not to hire anyone.
- Careers and trade training
- Apprenticeships, certification courses and trade job searches sit inside the same vocabulary and convert to nothing.
- Out-of-area locations
- Service area businesses attract queries naming towns they do not serve. This is a persistent leak and it needs location negatives, not just targeting settings.
- Commercial when you serve residential, or the reverse
- Commercial and residential work are different jobs with different equipment and pricing, and the terms overlap almost completely.
- Manufacturer and warranty support
- People looking for a manufacturer's warranty service or a specific brand's support line are not looking for an independent contractor.
Measurement
What counts as a conversion in home services?
A booked job, reached almost always by phone, which makes call tracking and call quality the measurement problem rather than form analytics.
The conversion is a call, not a form
Most home services demand converts by phone, so an account measured on form fills is measuring the minority of its own outcomes. Call tracking to keyword level is not optional here.
Call volume is not call quality
Wrong numbers, existing customers, suppliers and out-of-area callers all register as conversions unless calls are scored. Optimising toward raw call count reliably buys more of the wrong calls.
A booked job is not a completed job
Cancellations, no-access visits and quotes that never close all sit between the call and the revenue. The gap varies enough by job type to change which campaigns look profitable.
Job value spans a very wide range
A service call and a full system replacement differ by an order of magnitude. Without value by job type, bidding optimises toward the cheapest booking, which is usually the least valuable.
Local Services Ads report almost nothing comparable
Their reporting is far thinner than Search, which makes comparing the two on equal terms genuinely difficult. Without a shared definition of a booked job in your own system, budget decisions between them are guesswork.
Constraints
What constraints apply to home services advertising?
Local Services Ads require background screening and licence verification, service area accuracy carries a real cost, and trade licensing varies by jurisdiction.
Local Services Ads require screening and verification
Google requires background checks, licence and insurance verification for Local Services Ads, and the Google Guaranteed badge depends on maintaining them. That is an onboarding process with a lead time, not a setting, and it should be started well before the season you want it for.

Service area accuracy matters more than usual
Advertising into areas you cannot actually reach produces calls you must decline, and in a call-driven vertical each of those costs both the lead fee and staff time. Service area definitions should reflect where crews genuinely travel, not aspiration.
Trade licensing varies by jurisdiction
Licensing requirements for trades differ by state, province or country, and advertising services you are not licensed to perform in a given area is a regulatory problem before it is a marketing one.
Reviews function as a ranking and eligibility input
Local Services Ads and local search both weigh reviews heavily, which makes review generation part of the media system rather than a separate marketing activity. Neglecting it caps what the paid programme can achieve.
What good looks like
What does a good home services account look like?
Emergency and planned separated, service area honest, calls tracked and scored, budget flexed with weather and season rather than held flat.
- Emergency and planned work separated into different campaigns with different copy, bids, hours and landing pages.
- Local Services Ads and Search both running, with budget moved between them on booked jobs rather than on which reports more favourably.
- Call tracking to keyword level with calls scored for quality, so the account optimises toward jobs rather than ringing phones.
- Job value assigned by type, so replacements are not outbid by service calls in the algorithm's eyes.
- Budgets that flex with weather and season rather than sitting flat through the periods that produce most of the year's demand.
- Service area defined by where crews actually travel, with location negatives maintained for the towns that leak in.
- Review generation treated as part of the paid programme, because it feeds eligibility and ranking in both products.
When this vertical does not need us
If you are a single van operating in one town, this is a small account and a competent local freelancer or a well-run Local Services Ads setup will serve you better than we would for the money. If your phones are not answered out of hours in a vertical where emergency intent converts in minutes, fix that before buying media, because we would be paying for calls that go to voicemail. And if you need someone to build the review generation and field operations that feed this, that is an operations project rather than a media one.

Questions
What else comes up in home services marketing?
Whether Local Services Ads replace Search, how to handle seasonality, why call quality matters more than volume, and managing review requirements.
Do Local Services Ads replace Search campaigns?
No, and treating them as substitutes is the most common structural mistake in this vertical. They charge differently, report differently and reach differently. Most accounts of any size run both, and the useful question is which is producing booked jobs at a better cost, which only your own system can answer.
How should we handle seasonality?
By planning for it rather than reacting to it. Demand can move a month's worth of work into a week after a weather event, and a flat budget underspends exactly when the market is most valuable. Agree in advance what the budget does when demand spikes, so the decision is not made in a panic.
Why does call quality matter more than call volume?
Because wrong numbers, existing customers, suppliers and out-of-area callers all count as conversions unless someone scores them. An account optimising toward call count will find the cheapest calls, and the cheapest calls are disproportionately the ones you did not want.
How important are reviews?
Enough that they belong in the media conversation. Local Services Ads and local search both weigh them, so review generation caps or raises what the paid programme can achieve. Treating it as a separate marketing activity is why some accounts hit a ceiling nobody can explain from inside the ad platform.
Should we advertise emergency work out of hours?
If you can actually answer, yes, and it is often the least contested time in the auction. If the phone goes to voicemail, no, because the caller will simply ring the next result and you will have paid for the privilege of being ignored.
